Susan Atkins' First Husband (Donald Lee Laisure)

Donald Lee Laisure Sr., was born on April 18th, 1929. He served in the Marine Corps in WWII. While many articles state that he was from Texas, I have been unable to find any census information regarding if he grew up there. Most of his census infomation shows the multiple marriages and divorces that he had over the years. Most of the evidence showing that he lived in Texas is from when he was an adult. I found a census record from 1930, though I am unsure if it is actually him, but if so, he may have been born in Kansas. Despite having been in the Marine Corps he has lied in the past about being a 'retired general officer'. Also interestingly, he must have lied about his age when serving in WWII, because even if he went in in 1945, he would have only been 16 years old (though, I have heard many stories about teens at this time lying about their age to serve in WWII).

At some point Donald seems to have a daughter in 1964, and a son with his wife Williamae in 1966. He also had a son with wife Wilhelmina in 1958.

On June 28th,  1968, Donald Laisure pled guilty to a charge of credit card forgery (a felony) in the state of Texas. He was given five years of probation. In 1971, Laisure pawned some of his guns, and then later returned to get them back. When he went to get them back, he falsely stated that he hadn't evern been convicted of a crime punishable for more than one year. This brought more legal trouble, which can be read online, where seemed to argue the verbiage of whether he was really considered convicted or not.

He is most notably known for having married Susan Atkins. He stated that he met her on the freeway in 1965. Apparently, Laisure had been corresponding with Susan for years (and the power of ESP), but was lying to her the whole time. Laisure would refer to her as 'Honey Bear' in the press.  He told her that he was a millionaire (which he wasn't), and had enough money and power to buy Susan out of jail. Laisure stated the had spent 6.4 million to free her, and would try to get a pardon on the white house level. She found out he was lying three months after being married.

They got married while she was in prison, on September 2nd, 1981. She became his 35th wife (allegedly), but divorced when he reportedly wanted to marry again. They were legally divorced on October 13th, 1982. They did not have any children together. Despite sources stating that Susan had the marriage annulled, they were legally divorced in the state of Texas. In an interview with the Houston Press, Laisure stated that he got divorced in Cuba, 'signed by Castro himself'.

On an episode of Maury in 1993, Donald appeared and had stated that he had been married 45 times (at that point). Laisure talked big and played up to the stereotype of the rich country Texas man. He also apparently insisted on using a dollar sign to replace the 's' in his last name (Lai$sure). On the Maury episode, he stated that Susan was innocent, but in the 2009 interview with the Houston Press, he said that she was "guilty as hell".

Marriages and Divorces (some of them at least):

Willamae B Laisure: ? Sometime around 1966
Wilhelmina Laisure: ? Sometime around 1958
Veronica M Laisure: October 17th 1959 - ?
Wanda L Laisure: December 20th, 1968 - July 28th, 1969
Muriel A Laisure: June 22nd, 1970 - November 8th, 1971
Lynne H Laisure: December 30th, 1971 - September 26th, 1977
Ester L Laisure: February 16th, 1979 - December 23rd, 1980
Susan D. Laisure (Atkins) - September 2nd 1981 - October 13th, 1982
Janet L Laisure: July 14th 1983 - May 17th 1984
Terrie L Laisure: June 15 1984 - February 10th 1986

On September 25th, 2011, Donald Laisure passed away at the age of 82. He is buried at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

The Man Who Died From Eating Roaches

October 6th, 2012, there was a roach eating contest at the Ben Siegel Reptile Store, in Deerfield Beach, Florida. For beating the other contestants in eating more bugs (worms and roaches and other insects) the most, the prize winner would win one of four female Ball pythons, of which was valued at 850 dollars.
The winner of the contest was Edward Archbold, of West Palm Beach. Once Edward won the contest, he started throwing up, and then collapsed. Edward was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. None of the other contestants fell ill though.

According to his autopsy, he was not on any drugs. Edward died of "asphyxia due to choking and aspiration of gastric contents". His airway was blocked by roach body parts, which prevented him from breathing. The medical examiner stated, "There is a flap called the epiglottis that is supposed to stop objects from going into the lungs, Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work. In the video you could see him trying to swallow and breathe at the same time. We can’t do both simultaneously.".
In an article by the miami herald, it was stated that he had eaten 2 ounces of meal worms, 35 horn worms, and a bucketful of discoid roaches. A Floridian entomologist stated that the discoid roaches were a large insect to eat. "When you bite into it, you're going to get a gush of fat bodies, the gut content and the hemolymph-essentially insect blood. As you bite down, that's going to put pressure on the exoskeleton, so when it's ruptured, it's going to squirt.".

The bugs were the same sterile food given to the reptiles. The autopsy also concluded that Edward did not have an allergic reaction to the bugs. This was also the store's first bug eating contest.
Edward worked at Busch Canvas & Interiors for four years prior to his death. He was described as a "Smart good guy who was really good friends to people."

The store owner, Ben Siegel, stated, "We feel terribly awful. He looked like he just wanted to show off and was very nice. [Edward] was the life of the party.". Despite the accidental death, all the contestants signed a waiver accepting responsibility for their participation in the contest.
Edward's funeral was at St. Maurice Catholic Church, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was later cremated.

As for the reptile store, it appears to have closed sometime in 2015. The last review on yelp was from 2015, and most were not very good overall. The store had an instagram account with pictures dating before the accident, and there are still photos that advertise the event that Archbold died at. Their last post was from August of 2018, where they were selling their reptiles.

In 2015, Ben Siegel was arrested for abusing a reptile on January 2nd. Apparently, he had put the bearded dragon in his mouth, then tossed it into the air and swung it around several times. He then hit people inside the store with the animal, before squirting them with Gatorade. He was held on bond for 4500 dollars, and faced two charges of, "touch or strike battery and one count of causing death, pain, and suffering to an animal". It is unknown if the reptile died. Siegel had been arrested before, with three other battery charges from 2014, and a possession of coke from Christmas 2014. It is unknown what the ultimate result of these charges were.

But it doesn't stop there. Sometime around 2017 (according to the first Yelp Review), they opened up a new shop in Palmetto Bay, Florida, calling themselves the Miami Reptile Company. They have a facebook page where they post reptiles every day that they are holding for auction. The auctions are held on the website BSRAuctions.com

Mariesa Weber's Unusual Death

Mariesa Jean Weber was born on August 17th, 1968 in Brooklyn, New York. She had one sister named Gina, and a loving mother and father. In 1977 her family moved to Florida. Her mother describes her as having been a blonde bundle of joy, that was an honor student who loved to read. In her youth, Mariesa wanted to become a teacher. She had a love for music, taking pictures with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, and Sebastian Bach from Skid Row. She is seen in pictures with posters covering her room of various band members such as Mick Jagger and Kurt Cobain; one source even states that she had a tattoo on her ankle, "Hutch", in memory of the singer from INXS.

On October 28th, 2006, Mariesa came home and greeted her mother, to not be seen again. When she first disappeared, her family thought that she had been kidnapped. They searched the house all over, and did not find a trace of her. Through all of their searching for 11 days, they had no idea where she had went, though there was a smell, which the family blamed on rats.

One night, Mariesa's sister, Gina, went into Mariesa's room and looked behind a bookcase. She saw a foot, and her father used a flashlight to find that Mariesa had been wedged upside down underneath it.
Mariesa's mother, Connie, stated, "I'm Sleeping in the same house as her for 11 days, looking for her, and she's right in the bedroom.". It was stated that both sisters would adjust the TV plug by standing on a bureau next to the shelf leaning over the top. It was believed that Mariesa may have fallen headfirst into the area, where the 6ft bookshelf collapsed on her. Mariesa was 5'2" and 79 pounds at the time of her death. Articles have also listed her as having been 5'3" and 100 pounds.  Every article about the incident quotes the mother, "She's a little thing," her mother reportedly said. "And the bookcase is 6ft tall and solid. And she couldn't get out.". It is interesting to note that either at 5'2 or 5'3 with either weight, Mariesa's BMI would be considered underweight.

Interestingly, once the autopsy came back, it was revealed that Mariesa had multiple drugs in her system. It was revealed that she had recently taken morphine, codeine, marijuana, an antihistamine, an anti-inflammatory, an antidepressant (Celexa), and Xanax. Overall, her death was ruled an accident, with the drug combo being a potential contributing factor (I have seen people argue online though that some of these drugs may not have actually be from the time she passed away, as of course some drugs stay longer in the body than others).

After the family found Mariesa, many people questioned how they couldn't have smelled her decomposing body sooner. In an article by the Tampa Bay Times, it was stated that the "conditions were so squalid inside the house when the body was found - trash all around, birds, cats, and dogs in cages". That the sheriff's Deputy had to call the Code Enforcement and Animal Control. Allegedly, Mariesa's room was "chocked with clothing and debris". The deputy stated, "The piles of clothing in some areas of the bedroom were as tall, if not taller than me.".

Mariesa's death was the first in her immediate family. In 2009 her father passed away, and in 2015 her sister Gina passed away.

Mariesa was buried in Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens, in New Port Richey, Florida.

Larry Murillo-Moncada: From Lost to Found

 Larry Moncada: Lost Then Found

Larry Murillo-Moncada, presumably born in 1984, was last seen by his parents on November 28th, 2009 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He had left his parent's house wearing only his blue jeans and a long sleeved shirt, leaving behind his wallet, medication, and any other personal belongings. He was described as 140 pounds, and 6 feet tall, though one source states that he was 5'6" for some reason.
Prior to this,  Larry had come home after a working a Thanksgiving shift at the supermarket, 'No Frills'. He came home disoriented, his heart was beating fast, was experiencing hallucinations and hearing voices that were telling him to eat sugar He believed that someone was following him. That same day, his mother took him to the doctor where he was prescribed medicine, one source stating anti-depressants to treat anxiety, but he seemed have had an adverse reaction. On the 28th, Larry allegedly got into an argument with his parents, and fled his home. When he did not return the next day, his mother filed a missing person's report.

For years, no-one knew what happened to Larry, and in 2016, the store that he worked at closed down.
Ten years after his disappearance, Larry's body was found. There were no signs of trauma, but the context of his death became even more of a mystery. In January of 2019, contractors went to the closed grocery store to remove fittings and tear apart the freezer unit. Between the freezer and a wall, was an 18 inch gap of which Larry's body was found. At the time of discovery, authorities stated that the body had been there for a long period of time. When the body was first found, Sgt. Brandon Danielson stated that Larry was the first person to come to mind. After DNA testing, it was proved that the body was indeed Larry Moncada's.

The question beyond this is...how? How did he fall behind the freezer, and how did nobody notice his body was there? While the space was 18 inches wide, he had fallen 12 feet, and the loud sound of the freezers may have muffled any cries for help. As for why Larry even ended up in the freezer area, it was stated by many of the former employees that used to work there that they would climb on top of the freezers since the space was often used for storage and to pass time. The employees would climb the coolers to hide from customers and take breaks.

An autopsy showed no signs of trauma.

Early in the investigation for Larry, authorities and his parents went to the store looking for him. Both his mother and father had the feeling that the store would reveal some sort of answer, though nothing came to fruition. Even the authorities had asked Moncada's boss where he might have been, to which they stated that they didn't know, and Larry wasn't scheduled to work at that time.

His death is considered accidental, with the case being closed.

Since the news has come out that he was stuck behind the freezers, there have been many people on social media from the area stating that they had been to that exact store. During this time period, there are reports of people having smelled something odd, and even talking to employees about what the possible smell was, though it was usually fanned off.

 [Afterword]

While people wonder how Larry was able to get in the store, I personally think that he must have went straight to the store after leaving his parents' house. Despite not having any shoes or keys, some sources state that he left the house around 6 pm. Most stores would have been open during that time. Though, you would think that perhaps he would have been asked about why he wasn't wearing any shoes. I believe it is possible that he went to the store hiding spot to potentially sort out his thoughts, and of course met his fate by accident. Perhaps he slipped because his feet would have been wet from the snow?

Some people wonder what type of medicine that Larry was on. I have not seen any confirmed records as to what type of medicine that he had taken, though I do want to acknowledge that he allegedly had only tried the new medicine for one day before going missing. If the medication was an anti-depressant as they said, I am unsure how one day of medicine could make a person react in such a way. Typically, a medicine needs at least 2-4 weeks to course through one's body before knowing any sort of effects.
I do acknowledge though, that when looking at the side effects of Sertaline (a generic version of Zoloft which is also used to treat Anxiety) extreme side effects consist of:

-seizures
-abnormal bleeding or bruising
-hallucinations, fever sweating, confusion, fast heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
-rash, hives, and swelling and
-difficulty breathing.

I am not trying to come off as condescending, but since we don't know what type of medicine he was prescribed, it's tough to gauge whether it could have been the medicine or mental illness. Further, considering the way the story is represented, it seems that Larry was experiencing most of these symptoms before the medication, and not after. What I am most curious about are the voices that he heard in his head. Hearing voices is atypical of anxiety disorder, which makes me believe that if Larry was prescribed an SSRI, and had a different mental illness, then the anxiety medicine may have very well caused him to have his final freak out. A quick google search shows that a person could hear voices for either being schizophrenic or having bipolar disorder.

In the end, we will never truly know what went through Larry Moncada's mind when he left his parent's house that night. Rest in peace.

Sybil Brand Institute [SBI]

Sybil Brand Institute was a four story concrete building created in 1963, that served as a jail for women in Monterey Park, California. It was named after the activist of the same name, and set to be a minimum security facility. While it had the capacity to house 900-950 inmates, it had reached 2800 at one point in time, with between 700-850 people detained in 1982.

The visitation area

That same year, there was a law suit between the inmates of Sybil Brand and the county of Los Angeles about unequal privileges between the female inmates at the facility, and male inmates at other facilities. For example, the women were only allowed one hour of outdoor recreation four times a week, whereas men were allowed daily recreation. I am unsure what the end result of this lawsuit was.

It  In 1997, the jail was closed due to damage from the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, which caused it to be in poor physical condition. It is still managed by the sheriff's department. When the jail was closed, the inmates were transferred to the newer Twin Towers Complex. There has been talk in the past of renovating the building and opening it again as a prison. It has modern looking prison rooms, hallways, rec areas, visitation areas, and cells. The walls had a pink color, having been a women's prison, but they tend to be painted over for filming purposes. Productions used to film at about 2-3 projects a month. It used to be rentable for about 400 dollars a day.

Since then, the jail has been used in movies and tv, such as Reno 911, Twin Peaks, Legally Blonde, Arrest and Trial, Gangland, X-Foiles, America's Most Wanted, Desperate Housewives,  and 24. The jail has housed notable prisoners such as Susan McDougall and Susan Atkins (where she confessed the infamous story to Ronnie Howard, Virginia Graham, and other women).

In 2007, the jail had been under a 100 million dollar project to refurbish it which took 14 months, for nothing to happen. The plans for it were delayed, because it failed to meet many state standards. The paint on the walls peels off, tile and ceiling panels have popped off, and there is evidence of water damage to roof (as seen in pictures from 2010, the roof is leaking in multiple areas).

On top of that, the cells in the jail are too small for current California regulations. It was scheduled to reopen in 2011 with the renovations. I could not find any official article stating when the reopening happened. At the time though, there were people that didn't want the jail to be opened again, since it was in a lower income side of the city, and it may have caused crime to get worse. On the other hand, those that advocated for the jail to be opened again, argued that it would save the county 300 million dollars in construction costs, on top of there being at least 1000 detainees waiting to be housed somewhere at the time. I do not believe SBI housed any inmates though, once this renovation happened.

In 2019, the area was made unavailable for filming. According the the website 'places earth', the jail is awaiting demolition and rebuilding.

Pelle Ohlin and Cotard’s Delusion

Pelle Ohlin and Cotard’s Delusion

[Preface: To those that are not familiar with Black Metal and the community, this blog post is about one of the most notorious suicides in Black Metal. This post will have very dark themes, and a picture of gore. Proceed at your own risk. The names mentioned in this post are all essentially members of the band Mayhem. Pelle/Dead was the singer. His other bandmates at the time, which are to be mentioned in this post include Varg Vikernes, Necrobutcher, Hellhammer, and Euronymous (who is also now dead).]

Pelle, or Per Yngve Ohlin, is most notably known for having been the singer for the band Mayhem. Born on January 16th, 1969, Pelle hailed from Sweden. He had a rough beginning to his life, with his mother and father divorcing not long after he was born. Pelle suffered from sleep apnea as a child, and allegedly had wanted to die from the age of 3.

When he was ten years old, Pelle suffered from internal bleeding, after his spleen had ruptured. Allegedly the story was that he had an ice skating accident, as told in the past by former bandmate Necrobutcher. But in the book ‘Blod eld dod’ (Blood Fire Death), Pelle’s brother, Anders, stated that his brother’s spleen ruptured from a severe beating by bullies. Pelle had been bullied to the point that he was rushed to the hospital, and was allegedly clinically dead for some time. It is stated that after this incident, his fascination with darker things started to grow.

In his teen years, Pelle came to like Metal and Rock, with popular bands such as Black Sabbath, Motorhead, and Venom being among his favorites. He even called Quorthon, from Bathory, a wimp when he changed his musical style.

In 1986, he founded the metal band Morbid, and recorded the demo tape ‘December Moon’. Eventually he became disappointed with the path that the band was going, and decided to join the band Mayhem, since Maniac had left. Allegedly, Pelle sent the band a package with a demo tape, a letter with his ideas for the future, and a crucified mouse. In 1988, Pelle moved to Norway to become the new vocalist for the band.

Pelle, also known as ‘Dead’ during this time, became notorious for his stage presence. He was and still is known for using corpse paint, covering his face in black and white makeup. Despite there being other bands having painted their faces before (Kiss, King Diamond, Alice Cooper), Dead’s goal was to actually look...dead. He “actually wanted to look like a corpse. He didn’t do it to look cool.” As stated in an interview with Necrobutcher. Many people consider him to have been the first Black Metal musician to have used corpse paint.

Dead was known for many things, such as his hatred for cats. Pelle did not like cats, and would apparently keep a spear close by him to potentially chase any that came by. He also would bury his clothes in the ground, sometimes for months, “so that they start to rot and get that grave scent”. At one point, he had even asked his band mates to bury him in ground, so that his skin could turn pale.

Dead’s personality has been described as having been, “Shy, calm, introverted, depressed, and melancholic”. On many corners of the internet, it has been known that Dead was distinctly different from the people around him. He was never the type to talk about anything personal, and allegedly some people weren’t even sure if he had a sense of humor. In a 1998 interview with Hellhammer, he stated that as Euronymous and Dead delved more into the Satanic themes of the band, they became more reserved. Apparently, they would both say that “Christianity is evil”, though when asked if what the band was doing was evil, they wouldn’t respond. Per had a disdain for technology, even preferring to write letter in ‘longhand style’. Overall, he loved the forests and woodlands, preferring to spend his time there.

When the band got together, they rented out a deserted house in the forest, scaring the local townsfolk. Hellhammer has stated that Dead would lock himself in his room “and be permanently depressed.”. Apparently, Dead and Euronymous did not get along well, with the former not trusting the latter. The two would fight, with verbal quarrels turning into “bloody beatings”. On one occasion, Per went to sleep outside when Euronymous would not stop playing synth music. When he went outside, Euronymous followed him with his shotgun, shooting into the air. According to Varg Vikernes, Dead allegedly stabbed Euronymous once during an altercation.

Pelle also had a fascination with keeping animals, such as the one time he found a dead crow and kept it in a plastic bag. He apparently carried it around with him and would smell the bird before going onstage. He’d smell the bird so that he could sing with the smell of death in his nostrils. Pelle would also collect dead geese, and keep them under his bed.

Per believed that his blood has frozen in his veins, and did not eat in order to become more like a corpse. He had been heard on multiple occasions saying that he was not human, and did not belong in this world.

Pelle also became known to self mutilate when onstage. In 1990, he slashed his arm with a broken bottle. Apparently he was taken to the hospital, but since it was too late, there was no point in giving him stitches. He would also cut himself in front of his friends, that would later have to patch him up.

During this time, Mayhem was gaining traction, especially because of their image. Euronymous saw Per’s tendencies, and felt that it fit in with the dark image of the band. According to the band, Euronymous would encourage Pelle to kill himself.

In 1991, Dead and Euronymous were living in the woods together (even though Hellhammer is listed as having lived with them sometimes, in the 1998 interview, he stated that he lived with his grandmother because he couldn’t take the fighting anymore) at their rehearsal house. Dead spent most of his time drawing in his room, becoming more depressed. On April 8th of that year, Euronymous left Dead alone in the house.

Dead took a hunting knife and tried to slip his wrists and throat, then shot himself in the forehead with a shotgun (which I assume to have been Euronymous’). Dead’s body was later found by Euronymous, who was locked out and had to climb through an open window. When he came across the body, he went to the store (which Hellhammer described the nearest store as at least 20 minutes away) and bought a disposable camera. Euronymous them photographed Dead’s deceased body, but not before re-arranging some of the items to pose in the photo. After he got his shot, he then called the police.

Euronymous claimed that Dead had committed suicide because Black Metal had become “too trendy and commercialized”. Hellhammer developed the photos, with Euronymous promising to destroy them after (which he did not). Instead, he kept them inside an envelope at his record store, one of the pictures which, were sent to the owner of Warmaster Records, who used it as the album art for the notorious ‘Dawn of the Black Hearts’ album. A bootleg that was initially released in 1995 (the album was re-released in 2017, with a different album cover). While rumored to have made a stew with Dead's brain, which was not true, Euronymous and Hellhammer did end up creating jewelry out of some of the bone fragments that were left in the room (after police allegedly moved the body out).

The way Euronymous handled Dead’s suicide ultimately became his undoing, and caused tension between him and the other people in the band. The other were disgusted towards his attitude of the situation, with some speculating that Dead was left alone on purpose. Necrobutcher speculated that Euronymous may have potentially taken the pictures and forced the others to look, as a way of dealing with seeing the dead body; though, Necrobutcher ended his friendship and left the band after. Many years later, Necrobutcher stated that even he thought about murdering Euronymous before Varg Vikernes ended up doing so.

Interestingly, before Per passed away, Varg Vikernes had send him shotgun shells as a Christmas gift, though the shells he sent were not what Per used to kill himself. Allegedly, Per had a special shell saved for his suicide.

Pelle left a suicide note, that when translated from Swedish reads:

Excuse the blood, but I have slit my wrists and neck. It was the intention that I would die in the woods so that it would take a few days before I was possibly found. I belong in the woods and have always done so. No one will understand the reason for this anyway. To give some semblance of an explanation I'm not a human, this is just a dream and soon I will wake. It was too cold and the blood kept clotting, plus my new knife is too dull. If I don't succeed dying to the knife I will blow all the shit out of my skull. Yet I do not know. I left all my lyrics by "Let the good times roll"—plus the rest of the money. Whoever finds it gets the fucking thing. As a last salutation may I present "Life Eternal". Do whatever you want with the fucking thing. / Pelle. I didn't come up with this now, but seventeen years ago”

Dead was buried in Osterhaninge Kyrkogard, Sweden. He was 22.

-------

I have heard of this scenario for many years, in fact, it was one of the first gruesome Metal stories that I read about as a teenager. It wasn’t until recently that I really thought about the mental illness aspect about it as an adult. Reading what I have about Per, and everything that he went through, I thoroughly believe that he had Cotard’s Delusion. Many other people have said the same thing too, and his whole demeanor makes me wonder.

First of all, I will define Cotard’s Delusion (also known as Cotard’s Syndrome). In “Modern Synopsis of Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry II (1978)”, it describes:

Patients complain of having lost not only their possessions, status, and strength, but also their heart, blood, and intestines. The World beyond them may also be reduced to nothing. Trees, houses, and other people do not really exist anymore. The syndrome is seen most frequently in patients suffering from agitated depression, but occasionally occurs in acute schizophrenic breakdowns and in certain brain syndromes.

Interestingly, in a biography of Per (first source as listed below), it also describes him as being sometimes schizophrenic, though I do not know if this was meant literally.

In, “Special Report Towards Understanding Cotard’s Syndrome: An Overview (2012)”, it states that Cotard’s Syndrome is typically a symptom of an underlying disorder, that can last from weeks to years. The DSM V lists it as a somatic disorder, which corroborates with this. There are multiple psychiatric diseases associated with the disorder, such as depression (Unipolar and Bipolar), psychotic disorder, and brain injury (among many more).

Other than the symptoms stated above, Cotard’s delusion tends to manifest itself in three stages. The first stage exhibits behavior of hypochondria, depressive mood, and Cenesthopathy (feeling ill in areas not otherwise specified). In the first stage, it is not possible to diagnose the syndrome. The second stage exhibits behavior of nihilistic delusions, delusions of immortality, negativism, and anxiety. In the third stage, a person can exhibit persistent disturbances in a depressive state; or in the paranoid state they would exhibit less depressive symptoms. It should be noted though, that these stages are considered a hypothesis in the journal.

Though anecdotal, I have noticed from videos I’ve watched that it seems that people who have experienced Cotard’s seem have had near death experiences. In a video by Ask a Mortician (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqvEEqWGCyE), one of the suffers of the syndrome had a PET Scan that revealed his brain activity was like that of someone under anesthesia or asleep. Even further, this was revealed in the frontal areas of his brain, which seems to correlate with the journal paper. The paper states that while neural imaging shows no gross structural changes in a brain with the syndrome, “It has also been observed that right frontal damage has commonly occurred in cases of delusional misidentification (including Cotard’s syndrome). However, left lesions are also described.”.

While there is no cure, electroconvulsive therapy along side with psychotherapy has been reported as a helpful treatment. Even further, the occurrence of the syndrome is more prevalent in women, especially with older age, with the average age having been 47. The paper listed the syndrome as rare in people younger than the age of 25, and Bipolar Disorder being something to consider as the underlying cause of why a young person may experience this syndrome. Finally, those that suffer with this syndrome are at risk of suicide, and should be watched to ensure that they do not harm themselves.Even further, it has been proven that Cotard's and Capgras Delusions can co-exist at the same in one person, or even switch off with each other.

Overall, I, as with many other people, believe that Per was tormented person that needed help. What I wonder, is how was his childhood exactly? Unless stated somewhere in a book, I can’t help but wonder if there was a lot of childhood trauma for him to feel this way, or if anyone in his family ever considered him to have been Bipolar. Even back in the 90’s when he was still alive, he never talked about personal things. I can’t help but wonder why. While I am not old, not yet, I see that he killed himself at the age of 22, and it just makes me feel so sad. He was ridiculously young, and was unfortunately surrounded by terrible people that did not help him at all. I know that it was a different time back then, and mental health is not as big as it is now, but with the right support system, not having someone torment him every day, he could have still been with us today.

Rest in Peace, Pelle Ohlin.

What Happened To Randy Sellers?

What Happened To Randy Sellers?

Randy Lee Sellers was born on September 6th, 1962. He was born to Wanda and John Cotton. Randy had a younger brother, Tyran Renard, that was born in 1967. He was considered to have been from the Visalia/Morning view area of Kentucky.

Randy was in Alternative school at the time, and according to anecdotal evidence, he was considered one of the ‘bad boys’ in his area. “Randy was in and out of trouble most of his teen years and the local cops were quite familiar with him.”.

On August 15th, 1980, Randy was at the Kenton County Fair in Independence, Kentucky, when he was arrested for disorderly conduct and public intoxication. Allegedly, he got into a fistfight with someone at the fair, and the cops were called. The police believe that Randy was under the influence of drugs at the time, and even struck one of the cops after he was put in the squad car.

As the story goes, Randy was dropped off by the police about one mile from his family’s home in Visalia. Some reports say that Randy provided unclear directions to the house, and others claim that the officers dropped in him at the location as a favor to Randy. Either way, Randy never returned home and was never heard from again.

A man named Jack Isles, an alleged friend of Randy’s, stated that he was at the fair on the night of Randy’s disappearance. In an article, he stated that he regretted not having offered Randy a ride home that night. “I wish I could have told him to come on home. Let him go with me. I wish he was here, God-honest truth with you.”.

At first, it was believed that Randy had drowned, with his footprints near the Licking River which hugs the Visalia area. The footprints matched a set of hiking boots owned by one of his relatives, and there were marks that someone may have slipped and fallen into the water. When authorities searched the river to find nothing, they then believed that the footprints were left by people searching for Randy.

Many people believe that a man named Donald LeRoy Evans murdered Randy. Evans was a drifter that was eventually sentenced to death for the murder of a child in Mississippi; he claimed that he picked Randy up along Route 177, the main road in the Visalia area. Allegedly he took Randy to Kincaid Lake State Park and shared a beer with him. Then he supposedly shot Randy in the head with a .45 and buried his body, on that night in 1980. Evans also claimed to be responsible for other unsolved cases, including the death of Kimberly Dawn McClaskey. Evans was rather notorious for having preyed on people in rest areas and parks.

One of the reasons why Evans was considered a possibility is because he actually confessed to the murder in Mississippi and led authorities to the body of the girl. He also confessed to a murder in Florida of a prostitute that was found in a hotel room. He told authorities details that led to a set of his prints. So at least twice over, he confessed to murders that were proven to be tied to him.

Authorities searched Kincaid Lake State Park for Randy’s body in 1994, 14 years after his disappearance, but nothing was found. Evans was never charged in the case, and police were not even sure if he was involved. His claims though, were considered credible. Another one of the main reasons people believed that Evans may have been responsible, was because he drew a crude yet accurate map of the park.

When they went to search for Randy’s body, there was nothing there. Evans initially stated he buried Randy 3 feet deep in the ground with some sheet metal that he found. Then later, he changed his story to having sort of just covering Randy’s body with some forest brush.

There have been multiple searches in order to find Randy or even his body, yet none have turned up anything. In 2018, there was a search in March at the Kincaid park where a rescue team’s dogs picked up the alleged scent of a decaying body. Apparently, the area the scent was found matched the area that Donald Evans claimed to have buried Randy’s body. There was the belief that the map Evans drew was potentially misinterpreted at first, when they searched for Randy in the 90’s. In the recent past, some people believed that reading the map in a different way (or upside down) could reveal more information and potentially find Randy (which to me, doesn’t prove that the map was accurate in the first place). It is unknown what came of that search, if there was any dead body at all. In my personal opinion, I do not see how a body can still be decaying 38 years after the fact. Interestingly, the case was still considered open, as of 2018.

Randy’s mother believes that her son hitched a ride with Evans to the park, in hopes of seeing her since she was staying there with a friend at the time. As recently as 2019, Wanda Cotton has been reported stating that she believes that Evans killed her son. Wanda said in 2019, “I believe in my heart, that Randy was killed by Donald LeRoy Evans.”. She believes that Randy’s body is somewhere in the park, with a marker to remember him, and another woman who was killed.

Randy’s physical appearance is described as having been 5’9”, 149 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. Randy had a birthmark on the crown of his head, a scar above his left eye, and a surgical scar on his right knee. He had a scar on his left elbow, from an old fracture. There was a tattoo of the letter ‘R’ on his right forearm, though other sources state that it was on a forearm. He may have had a crown on tooth, and wore a beard on his chin at the time of his disappearance. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, and work shoes.

The reason I bring this up now, is that there is an interesting John Doe that seems to match that description. On doenetwork there is John Doe 419UMOK. He was found on April 9th, 1995 in Crowder, Oklahoma next to a Jane Doe. The Jane Doe was estimated to have been 18-30 years old, 5’6”, with long light brown almost blonde looking hair. Jane wore black denim size 10 pants, blue underwear, a red pullover shirt, white socks, and a white bra. She had 2 rings on her left hand, one of a yellow metal band, and other of a single white stone. John was estimated to have been 20-30 years old, 5’7”,with brown/light blond hair, with a light brown mustache. He wore a green denim pair of pants (31/34) black and white checkered briefs, a t-shirt, and a leather jacket. He had a ring on his left hand, a yellow metal band, with 14k and TW inscribed on the inside. He also wore a watch that was still working at the time their bodies were found, though it was an hour behind the current. Most interestingly, is that this doe had a tattoo of the letter ‘R’ on his upper left forearm. He also had a tattoo of a cross on his upper left arm. Both bodies were found decomposing under a tree near Lake Eufala, and seemed to have been dragged about 50 feet from a dirt road. Though it may seem far fetched that this doe may have been Randy, the tattoo was a detail that I could not omit.

There are some interesting things that I have come across with Randy’s case, whether it be from online errors, to just random things. The first thing, is that on Randy’s page for the doe network site, he is listed as female, all other sites correctly list him as male. For some reason, the main photo used to show Randy’s most recent appearance when he disappeared, has black markings that make it look like he was wearing a black shirt. The full version of the photo is included on the namus profile for him, and it shows that he was shirtless. I know that this means nothing, but I can’t understand why someone would “photoshop” a fake shirt on a picture of him?

Through reading about this case, I have not came across a lot of information on Randy’s background. There is the info that he was in alternative school, and the anecdotal that he was a bit of a bad boy. There is a personal story on a post on websleuths were someone said that Randy was pretty familiar with the cops, so the idea that they didn’t know where his house was at was asinine. I haven’t even heard anything about the night of the fair, and I am curious what the fight that Randy had was about. Was it just a drunken brawl? Was there a reason that he got into the fight other than being drunk? Who was the person that he got into a fight with? Was it an adult or another teen? Was it perhaps someone related to a cop or a big official? How long had Randy been in alternative school for, and what the reason why he was there exactly? Did he have a hard time with his family? Did he ever talk about running away possibly?

I think that it is important too, to look at a map of the area as a whole. The Visalia area is not that far from Ohio.

There a few does from that area that may be plausibly close to being Randy.

https://www.namus.gov/UnidentifiedPersons/Case#/6715?nav

There have been two facial progressions of Randy, one in 2006, and another in 2011. I will be completely honest, I think both are terrible. The first one from 2006 is honestly terrible and does not look like him at all. The second on from 2011 is closer, but it does not seem too accurate. This honestly reminds me of the Reet Jurvetson case where the drawings of her when she was Jane Doe were completely different from how she really looked. Personally, I think that Randy looked almost exactly like his father, down to the nose and hairline. I don’t understand why they did not go with a progression based off of that.

Unfortunately, on December 10th, 1990, Randy’s younger brother Tyran committed suicide. He is buried at Mother of God Cemetery in Kenton Vale, Kentucky.

There is still uncertainty as to what happened to Randy. Many people, like his mother, believed that he was murdered by Donald Evans. Despite looking for the body 14 years later, there has not been any evidence that Randy was buried in the park. Though at the same time too, a 14 year gap of looking for a body that may have been buried in a shallow grave leaves more than enough time for nature to naturally scatter the pieces. Others believe that Randy may have been killed by the police, potentially just tired of a ‘juvenile delinquent’. Rumors have said that police killed Randy, and buried the body on property of a policeman.

Randy’s parents, John and Wanda, are still alive today (as of 2020), and are still looking for answers as to what happened to their son. In 2019, it was revealed that John had been diagnosed with cancer. The parents expressed their worry that after they eventually pass away, who would remember Randy. Fortunately, research teams and the press have shown that people are still thinking about Randy, even to this day.

He had a full beard and mustache at the time of his disappearance. Joseph was last seen wearing a black felt cowboy hat, a white long sleeved western shirt with grey pinstripes, brown cowboy boots, and wheat colored Wrangler jeans. He may have been wearing a gold box square link necklace, a gold Seiko watch with a white face, a gold Ulvade Jr. College 1981 graduation ring, a gold horseshoe ring with 11 diamonds, a solid brass custom belt buckle, and was carrying a Morgan Silver Dollar money clip.

Joe was last seen on March 1st, 1988 in Fort Stockton, Texas. Another source states that he was last seen in Pecos, Texas. (The towns are an hour away from each other). He was last seen between 22:30 and 23:00, when he left a friend’s house (or girlfriend’s), heading for his ranch home (or grandmother’s). Joseph’s pickup truck was found at the Midland International Airport, still loaded with feed. The location is about an hour and a half away from where he was last seen (In Fort Stockton).

Foul play is possible. During the first few months after he disappeared, there were horseback riders that searched several locations for his body. In 2008, authorities searched for Joe’s body again, but found nothing useful. In 2009, police arrested a Lightsey Nathan Saul in New Mexico, and charged him conspiracy to commit capital murder in Daggett’s case. Two other suspects, George McIntyre and Robert Ezell, were later indicted on the same charges. It is believed that Saul asked an acquaintance to murder Joseph Daggett because Joe was allegedly having an affair with Saul’s wife.

In 2011, Saul was found guilty and sentenced to 60 years in prison, with the charges against McIntyre and Ezell still pending. No-one has been charged with the actual causation of Joseph’s death. In 2010, George McIntyre was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child, and had a bail of 300,000 dollars (USD).

Joseph is considered deceased, at least by his family, with a burial site in East Hill Cemetery, Fort Stockton, Texas.

Investigating Agency: Pecos County Sheriff's Office 432-336-3521

I will discuss Joseph's case in more detail in a future post.
